General Rules

 

 

 

 

 

1. Appalachian Powerlifting recognizes the following lifts, which must be performed in the designated sequence in all, excepting single-lift competitions conducted.1.1 Squat b. Bench Press c. Deadlift = d. Total

The addition of the heaviest successful lifts shall result in the Total (d).

Lifters are allowed three attempts per event.

1.2 Only the Lifter, Spotters/Loaders and Judges are allowed on the platform, No-one else. You can not have someone telling how far to go down or when to come up.

1.3. After your attempt, you may choose to attempt the same weight, attempt a heavier weight, or pass on their next attempt. You may never request a lighter weight than that of their first attempt.

1.4. Lifting order is broken into flights. Flights begin with the lightest attempts and end with the heaviest. Final lifting order is up to the discretion of the meet director.

1.5 A majority decision by three judges determines the good or bad.

1.6. It is encouraged that lifters inquire as to why an attempt was turned down, but it is forbidden to argue with or insult a judge.

1.7. The heaviest successful attempt will count toward the meet.

1.8. Hooking is permitted. Hooking is covering the last joint of the thumb with the other fingers of the same hand while gripping the bar.

1.9. If a competitor cannot fully extend their arm or has any other disability that may effect their performance, they must notify the judges before the beginning of the meet so that they may make a ruling over the disability.

1.10. A fourth attempt may be allowed to break a Record, but successful fourth attempts may never count toward the meet results or placings. First you must get your 3rd attempt.

1.11.If two lifters in the same class tie, the lighter lifter automatically wins the higher placing.

1.12. If a coach or personal spotter blocks the view of a judge, the judge must rule the lift as a bad attempt because they could not see otherwise.

1.13. The use of baggy clothes is not permitted in any Appalachian Powerlifting meet. A Wrestling singlet must be worn in all lifts preformed in championship meets. any other meet lifter must wear a non baggy t -shirt and non baggy gym style shorts. No paints of any kind can be worn in any Appalachian Powerlifting.

1.14. The meet director has no power to over turn the judges decision of a bad lift.

1.15. The meet director does have the right to turn down a lift that the judges have ruled as good if the meet director believes that an attempt credited as good goes against the ideals of the federation, if a lifter displays unnecessary abuse of equipment, insults the judges, staff, or audience, or puts other participants at an unnecessary risk.

1.16. The meet director or a majority vote between the judges may eject an athlete from the meet or deny attempts based on the athletes actions or statements.

1.17. The use of profanity or alcohol at an Appalachian powerlifting meet event is grounds for immediate ejection and removal from the meet site.

1.18. A variance of plus or minus one pound is allowed due to the possible inaccuracies in meet site scales.

1.19. Although there is no ban on standard Powerlifting equipment, only one Bench Shirt or Squat Suit can be worn at a time. Your Equipment can be checked by the Judges before or after a lift, if your equipment does not comply with Appalachian Powerlifting rules your lift will be called ( Bad )

1.20. Don't harm or destroy any thing that is not your own property, you will be held accountable for any damage you cause.

1.21. The Meet Director has the right to deny any applicant the right to the lift in any Appalachian Powerlifting Tournament that they are hosting if they think the Applicant is at risk to themselves, or others around them.

1.22. The Meet Director has the right to Deny entry into the place of Venue where the Appalachian Powerlifting Tournament is being held to any person, ( member of the Appalachian Powerlifting, or Spectator ) for any reason they see fit.

2. All competitions under Appalachian Powerlifting rules must be conducted in Lbs or kilograms.
2.1 All lifts in kilograms must be converted to lbs at the meet and listed as lbs in the records.

3. Appalachian Powerlifting will keep records for both divisions in each body weight category lifting in. Records will only be keep for raw, single ply, and multi full power, raw and multi ply push and pull, raw and multi squat , bench, and deadlift only events, raw body weight for reps, strict curls.

4. The Appalachian Powerlifting recognizes and keeps records in lbs for the same lifts within the age and body weight categories as follow:

Master from 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69,

5. Competitive lifting shall be restricted to competitors aged minimum 12 years. The lifter’s birthday shall restrict the competition age classes where age limits are imposed.

6. RULES OF PERFORMANCE OF SQUAT, BENCH PRESS, DEADLIFT, BENCH FOR REPS, STRICT CURL.

Squats

1. A legal squat is performed when the top of the upper thigh passes below the height of the knee.

2. There will be no "Up" call when the lifter is in the bottom of the Squat, and no pause is necessary.

3. When the proper weight is loaded the head judge will give the "Bar Ready" command. The lifter will then take the weight onto their back or shoulders and prepare their proper stance.( proper stance is with the knees locked and the head up ), if the lifter is having trouble coming out of the rack and getting set up the spotters can help stable the weight but must not touch the bar or lifter once the Head Judge has give the SQUAT command. If any Spotter touches the bar or the lifter after the Head Judge has given the SQUAT command the lift will be called BAD.

4. Once the lifter is set the head judge will give the "Squat" command. The squatter will break parallel as indicated in rule #1 and may lift immediately to the beginning stance, completely erect. No bent knees, not hunched over.

5. Once the squat is completed the lifter must wait for the Head Judge will give the "Rack" command.

6. After the head judge gives the "Rack" command the squatter may have help in racking the weight.

7. During the squat, feet must remain planted and the bar must move up in one continual motion.

8.  must wear a singlet if not wearing a squat suit in  championship meets. must wear shorts and t shirt while lifting in all other meets.

Causes for Disqualification of a Squat

1. Failure to observe the head referee’s signals at the commencement or completion of a lift.

2. Double bouncing or more than one recovery attempt at the bottom of the lift.

3. Failure to assume an upright position with the knees locked at the commencement and completion of the lift.

4. Movement of the feet laterally, backward or forward after the referee’s commencement or before the completion signal.

5.Failure to bend the knees and lower the body until the surface of the legs at the hip joint is

lower than the tops of the knees.

6. Changing the general position of the bar across the shoulders after the commencement of the lift.

7. Contact with the bar by the spotters between the referee’s signals.

8. Contact of elbows or upper arms with the legs.

9. Failure to make a bona fide attempt to return the bar to the racks.

10. Any intentional dropping or dumping of the bar

BENCH PRESS
 
1.  Must wear a singlet in championship meets.  must wear shorts and t shirt at all other meets.

2. Your head can be up or down, doesn't’t matter.

3. You can tip toe or be flat footed, but your foot can not loose contact with the floor. (foot can move or twist, but not move as much as in a step. the foot slips it must come directly back to where your foot was when you started. The judge has the right to call the lift bad if he/she feels the slip was not due to an accident.

4. If you take a hand out, you must lock your elbows before starting the bar down towards your chest. If you do not take a hand out you can come out of the rack and straight down towards your chest, if you like.

5. Head Judge will give an audible "start"command then you must begin the lift.

6. Once you have received the START signal. The Bar must come down and touch the lifters chest. There will be NO PRESS command, the lifter must allow the bar to briefly become motionless and than press to lock position and wait for rack command.

7. Once the Bar has started upward, it can pause, but if it move downward at all the lift will be called bad and the Head Judge will instruct the Spotters to take the bar.

8. Bar can be a little uneven on the way up ( not a lot ) but both sides must be locked out at the same time.

9. You must remain in the LOCK OUT position at the top until the Head Judge gives you the RACK signal.

10. If any spotter touches the bar for any reason before the Head Judge gives you the Rack signal, the lift WILL NOT count.

11. Once you have received the RACK signal, at this time the Spotters will help you back into the rack and the lift is over.

12. Your HAND OUT person, MUST step back or to the side so the Head Judge can see the lifter, if not the lifter WILL NOT receive a PRESS or a RACK signal and the lift will be called BAD.

13. NO ONE is allowed on the platform or in the immediate lifting area, other than, Judges, Spotters, Loaders, Officials, and Lifter.

Causes for Disqualification of a Bench Press

1. Failure to observe the referee signals at the commencement or completion of the lift.

2. Any change in the elected lifting position or the raising of the buttocks, or lateral movement of the hands, during the lift proper (between the referee signals). Any excessive movement or change of contact of the feet during the lift proper.

3. Bouncing the bar off the chest.

4. Allowing the bar to sink into the chest after receiving the referee signal to Press.

5. Not locking both elbows out at the top, fully and at the same time

DEADLIFT
1. The bar must move up in one continual motion.

2. No gloves or straps. Wraps may not touch the bar.

3. No hitching or jerking the bar up the thighs.

4. The intentional release of the bar from above the knees may be interpreted as equipment abuse and could result in immediate ejection.

5. The athlete may begin after hearing the "Bar Ready" signal and the head judge gives the "Lift" signal by raising their hand.

6. Judges look for the athlete to be standing completely erect, shoulders back, chest out, and knees locked but not hyper extended.
7. The athlete may not lower the weight until the head judge gives the "Down" signal by lowering their hand.

8. Feet must remain stationary throughout the lift.

9. Your hands MUST stay on the bar all the way back down, any dropping or throwing the bar down, the lift will called BAD. Bar must be in control at all times.

10. Must wear a singlet if not wearing a dead lifting suit in championship meets.  must wear shorts and t shirt at all othe meets.

Causes for Disqualification of a Dead lift

1.Any downward motion of the bar before it reaches the final position.

2.Failure to stand erect.

3.Failure to lock the knees and hips straight at the completion of the lift.

4.Supporting the bar on the thighs during the performance of the lift. ‘Supporting’ is defined as a body position adopted by the lifter that could not be maintained without the counter-balance of the weight being lifted.

5 Movement of the feet laterally, backward or forward during execution of the lift.

6 Lowering the bar before receiving the head referee’s signal.

7 Dumping or allowing the bar to return to the platform without maintaining control with both hands.

APPALACHIAN POWERLIFTING RAW BENCH PRESS REP. COMPETITION

Weight that can be chosen for Reps. for Teenage Women & Women: 50% of body weight

Teenage Men, Juniors and Men: Will use body weight.

Weight will be rounded off to the nearest bar weight. Example: 207 will go to 205, 208 or 209 will go to 210.

1. There will be only one Judge: Judge will count the reps completed.

2. Judge will set in side Judge spot.

3. Every Rep. must touch chest and be fully extended at the top.

4. Buttock must remain on bench at all times.

5. Feet must remain on floor at all times and remain still.

6. Head can be up or down and can even move.

7. Only the fully completed reps. will count, and only the one judge is counting the reps. that he sees completed.

8. You can not pause at the top or bottom to rest, no resting, or the judge will say rack.

9. The one minute rule will apply for the lifter to get to bench and start lifting once bar is loaded.

10. Each lifter get one attempt to do as many reps. as possible no second and third attempts.

11. Competition will start with lower weight and come through.

12.Equipment that can be Used:

1. Must wear a singlet at championship meets. must wear shorts and t shirt at all other meets.

2. Belt, and Wrist Wraps can be worn. Chalk can be used.

3. Meet Director has control over when the Rep. Competition will

4. No bench shirts allowed

13.Take place during the meet. ( usually will take place either right before or right after the Reg. Bench Press, before the Dead lift

Strict Curl
1. The lifter shall face the front of the platform. The bar shall be held horizontally across the thighs with the hands (palms outward) and fingers gripping the bar and the feet flat on the platform with the knees locked and arms fully extended.

Note: The staggering of the legs (one foot in front of the other) is allowed
as long as the knees are locked and feet are flat on the platform.

2. After removing the bar from the racks, the lifter must move backwards to establish his position. The lifter shall wait in this position for the Chief
Referee's signal. The signal shall be given as soon as the lifter is motionless and the bar properly positioned. The Chief Referee's signal shall consist of an upward movement of the arm and the audible command "curl".

3. Upon receiving the Chief Referee's signal, the lifter must bring the bar up to the fully curled position (bar near chin or throat with palms facing
backward). The knees must remain locked and the shoulders square or back throughout the entire lift.

4. On completion of the lift, the knees shall be locked in a straight position and the shoulders square or back.

5. The legs and hips may not be used in any way for momentum to complete the lift. Any thrusting of the legs or hips fore momentum is strictly forbidden.

6. The Chief Referee's signal shall consist of a downward movement of the hand and the audible command "down." The signal will not be given until the
bar is held motionless and the lifter is in the apparent finished position.

7. When the lifter is motionless, the Chief Referee will give the signal to replace the bar.The signal to replace the bar will consist of a backward motion of the hand and the audible command "rack."

8. Any rising of the bar or any deliberate attempt to do so will count as an attempt.

9. The Lifter may, at the Chief Referee's discretion, be given an additional attempt at the same weight if failure in an attempt was due to an error by one or more of the spotter loaders.

Causes for Disqualification of the Strict Curl
1. Any downward movement of the bar before it reaches the final position.

2. Failure to stand erect with the shoulders square or back.

3. Failure to, keep the knees locked and straight at during the lift.

4. Stepping backward or forward or rocking feet between ball and heel.

5. Lowering or racking the bar before receiving the Chief Referee's signal.

6. Bouncing the bar off the thighs to start the upward motion.

 

 

 7.Costume and Personal Equipment

Definition of Single Ply

The definition of ply/layer of material as applied to the manufacture of lifting apparel is:

• Single ply – is a thickness, layer of folded, interwoven or laminated material that cannot be

separated anywhere within the confines of the material

• Double-ply or multi-ply - is a material separable layers, each layer as thick as single-ply

Specific equipment requirements are listed below.

1. Lifting Suit

. It must be an individual full length article of cloth fabric. Its construction may consist of multiple plies to any thickness (except in raw or single ply division)but must, as a whole, be a singular component. The straps must be worn over the shoulders at all times while lifting in competition. It may be of any color or colors. The length of the leg, when worn, must not extend beyond mid-thigh (medial point between crotch and top of knee cap). Women may wear a one-piece suit of comparable design to the lifting suit. Leotards with sleeves or high cut leg lines are not permitted.

2.Bench Press Shirt

A bench press shirt of the basic design may be worn. It must be an individual article of cloth fabric. only single ply is allowed in single ply powerlifting. 2 or more ply's allowed only in Bench only and multi-ply powerlifting divisions . You can not wear two different shirts at one time. It may be of any color or colors. Sleeves may not extend beyond the elbow when worn. Open back and Velcro shirts are allowed

 

 

 3. Undershirt

One undershirt (of a design consistent with what is commonly called a T-shirt) with or without sleeves, maybe be worn under the lifting suit. It must be an individual article of cloth fabric. The thickness shall not be designed to increase, enlarge, or enhance the bodes natural musculature. Sleeves must be short and remain above the elbow when worn. It may be of any color or colors, but

shall not portray indecency or be offensive to the spirit of the competition. At least a Tee shirt must be worn when Benching, if you are not wearing a Bench Press Shirt.

4.. Briefs

A pair of briefs of any design may be worn, provided that the length of the legs does not exceed mid thigh, and that the waist does not extend beyond approximately mid torso. The briefs must be an individual article of cloth fabric. The construction may consist of multiple plies to any thickness but must, as a whole, be a singular component. Athletic supporters are permitted under the briefs. The Briefs must not show or be longer than he Squat suit that they are worn under.

5. Socks

Socks may be worn. When worn they may not extend over the knee nor on the leg so that they touch any knee wrapping or knee cap supporter. Full length leg stockings, tights, or hose are not permitted.

6. Special Considerations

Women may wear additional protective briefs or panties. Women may also wear a bra provided it contains no special support. A Appalachian Powerlifting Official can grant a lifter (special Privileges) provided there is a legitimate reason to why the lifter needs the privilege, And must be discussed with all 3 judges before the meet starts. At this time it will be voted On by the judges to allow it or not. It can not benefit in the lift in any way and can not Obstruct the judges view or decision in any way or the lift will automatically be refused By the judges. It is the lifters place to bring anything of question to the sight of a Appalachian Powerlifting Official and discussed be fore the meet starts or it will denied, ( gear, personal, wraps, etc. )

7.Lifting Belt

A competitor may wear a belt. If worn, it shall be on the outside of the lifting suit.

Materials and Construction:

1 The main body shall be made of leather in one or more laminations, which may be glued and/or stitched together.

2 It shall not have any additional padding, bracing, or supports of any material either on the surface or concealed within the laminations.

3 A metal buckle, studs, and stitching are the only non-leather components permitted. The

buckle shall be attached at one end of the belt by means of studs and/or stitching.

4. A single leather tongue loop only shall be attached close to the buckle by means of studs

and/or stitching. No additional loop is permitted.

A one or two prong buckle as well as the "lever action" fastening device may be used.

5. The lifter’s name, nation, state, or club may appear on the outside of the belt.

6.
Footwear more substantial than basic socks must be worn. The only restrictions to such footwear are that no metal cleats or spikes are permitted.

7. Wraps
Only wraps of a one-ply construction are permitted. The fabric nature shall be an elastic weave primarily of polyester, cotton, or medical crepe singly or in combination. Wraps of rubber or rubberized substitutes are not permitted. Wraps may be used as follows:

7.1 Wrist-Wraps

a.Wraps not exceeding 1m in length and 8cm in width may be worn. Alternatively,elasticized wristbands not exceeding 10cm in width may be worn. A combination of the two is not permitted. Wrist wraps may have a thumb loop and Velcro patch for securing them.

b. A wrist wrap shall not extend beyond 10cm above and 2cm below the center of the wrist joint, not exceeding a total of 12cm.
 
7.2 Knee-Wraps

a) Wraps not exceeding 2.5m in length and 8cm in width may be worn. Alternatively, elastic type knee supports not exceeding 20cm in length may be worn. A combination of the two is not permitted.

b) A knee wrap shall not extend beyond 15cm above and 15cm below the center of the knee joint, not exceeding a total of 30cm.

c) Knee wraps shall not touch the socks or lifting suit.

d) Wraps shall not be used elsewhere on the body.

e) Knee wraps are permitted for the squat, Bench Press and Dead lift.

8. Elbow wraps not allowed unless proof of a medical condition.

9. The use of oil, grease or other lubricants The use of oil, grease or other lubricants and liquids on the body, costume, or personal equipment to aid in the execution of a lift is not permitted. This does not preclude the advanced therapeutic attempts. Only chalk (magnesium carbonate) may be used on the hands, bar-resting position in the squat and buttocks and shoulders in the bench press. Only powder in compressed block form (pool style chalk) may be used on the thighs in the Dead lift. The Promoter may determine its application in a designated area only. Nothing may be purposely applied to the platform, bench, or bars.

10. Lifters Apparel and Personal Equipment All articles of a lifter’s costume and personal equipment shall be clean and generally neat and presentable.

11. Shin Pads Are not allowed.

12. INSPECTION OF COSTUME AND PERSONAL EQUIPMENT

a. There will be no official inspection of costume and personal equipment prior to lifting.

b. It will be the lifter’s responsibility to be present on the platform outfitted in accordance with the rules governing costume and personal equipment.

c. Any item mentioned previously under costume and personal equipment may be inspected prior to the competition if the lifter has any doubt as to the legality of that item. Such inspections should be requested during the weigh-in sessions and directed to the Appalachian Powerlifting referees present. Such inspections may also be made at any time prior to lifting by one of the appointed Appalachian Powerlifting Contest Officials or Appalachian Powerlifting referee. Any conjecture or doubt about the legality of any such items shall be referred to the Appalachian Powerlifting Contest Officials or Technical Officer.

d. Items or personal attire not covered in the rules governing costume and personal equipment suchas: headbands, mouthpieces, ribbons, costume jewelry, eye wear and feminine hygiene articles are permitted.

e. Any items worn on the platform considered objectionable by virtue of being unclean, torn or tattered, indecent or offensive to the spirit of the competition will be rejected before the lifter is permitted to proceed.

f. If a lifter performs on the platform wearing or using any item that is illegal or not verifiable approved, the lifter shall lose credit for that lift and may be disqualified from the competition. Any minor oversights, or items covered in (f) above, noticed before the lifter performs should beindicated to the lifter and rectified prior to continuing.

g. Any lifter performing on the platform may be inspected before or after the lift if any of the referees doubt the legality of the costume or personal equipment being used.

h. Any lifter successful in a record attempt must be inspected. Inspection may be solely visual when the legality of the lifter’s costume and personal equipment is obvious, or otherwise more thorough. Thorough inspections should be performed off the platform, preferably in a private area, either by the three referees, or official’s delegates by the referees in cases where the lifter is of the opposite sex. In all cases the head referee shall make an announcement to the speaker andrecords processor that the record has been verified.

8. EQUIPMENT & SPECIFICATIONS

8.1 Disc or Plates

1 All discs must be clearly marked with their weight and loaded in the sequence Of heavier discs innermost with the small discs in descending weight.

2.The first and heaviest plate loaded on the bar must be loaded face in; with the Rest of the plates loaded face out as weight is loaded.

3.It is suggested that plates conform to the following range, 2.5 lb, 5 lb. 10 lb. 25 lb. 35 lb. 45 lb. 100 lb.

8.2 Bars

The bar shall be straight, well knurled, and grooved..

It shall conform to the following dimensions, excepting specific bars for the squat and Dead lift.

a) Total overall length shall be 220cm

b) Distance between the inside collar faces is not to exceed 132cm or be less than 131cm

c) Diameter of the bar is not to exceed 29mm or be less than 28mm.

d) Weight of the bar is to be 20.0kg. All bars must weigh within 0.25% accuracy.

e) Diameter of the sleeves is to be between 50-52mm.

f) There shall be a circumferential machine marking so as to measure 81cm between

markings, excepting "Special Squat and Dead lift Bars".

An over sized sized squat bar may be up to 240cm in length with a bar diameter of upto 33mm.. Squat Bar weight not to exceed 60lbs., A normal length and weight bar with a bar diameter of 30mm is allowed. A specific bar may be used for the Deadlift. Its length may be up to 230cm with a bar diameter of no less than 27mm. Center knurling is not required.

8.3 Collars

1 Shall always be used in competition. This also includes Spring loaded Clamps.

2. Collars made specifically for specialized squat bar are to be used with that specific bar.

3.. Should blood appear on the bar, or open wounds on lifter, it must be rectified immediately, use 1 part bleach and 1 part water to clean bar.

8.4 Squat Racks

1. Squat racks shall be of a sturdy construction and provide maximum stability. The base shall be of such design that it does not impede the lifter or the loaders/spotters. It may consist of a one piece unit or two separate stands designed to hold the bar in a horizontal position.

2. The design of the squat racks shall allow adjustments that accommodate all lifters.

2A) Height adjustments should be at incremental stages not exceeding 2 in..

2B) For extra safety all hydraulic racks should be capable of being secured at the required height by means of pins.

2C) In all competitions an adjustable rack with a hydraulic mechanism or a non conventional squat rack should be used.

8.5 Bench

The bench shall be of sturdy construction for maximum stability and conform to the

following dimensions:

A) Length - not less than (1.22m) and shall be flat and level.

B) Width 11.42in. -12.50 in.29-32cm

c) Height 16.54 - 17.72 in. (42-45cm) measured from the floor to the top of the padded surface

of the bench without being depressed or compacted.

D) The height of the uprights on adjustable benches should be from a minimum

of 32.28 in. to a maximum of 39.37 in. measured from the floor to the bar rest

position. On non adjustable benches the height of the uprights must be

between 34.25 in. and 39.37 in. from the floor to the bar rest position.

E) The minimum width between the insides of the bar rests shall be 1.10m.
